Workout Wednesday – March 2014

2014 02-19 Can't Make it to the GymNot much has changed this month. I’ve unfortunately not been to CrossFit but am looking forward to getting back into it, just need this weather to cooperate so I can get my butt out of bed in the mornings! No seriously look at the alarms I’ve had to set recently, and that’s not even all of them OR a gym day! That’s to get up and go to work. Thankfully the days have already started to get longer and hopefully that’ll make it easier to sort out my life.

2014 02-24 My New Favorite DressingIn addition to my struggling to get out of bed in the mornings, my eating healthier has been sort of hit or miss which is a bummer. However, the week before last I found this AWESOME dressing and it made my salads once again wonderful. I’ve also determined that it’s okay not to eat a salad every day of every week. They were starting to get so dull and repetitive that it’s perfectly okay to take a week off periodically and have sandwiches or wraps! Just not every week.

The Willpower Instinct Project – Week 1

McGonigal, Kelly - The Willpower InstinctSo this first week was super simple. On top of other things that were going on this week I wasn’t sure if it was the best week to start, but better now than never. I had two experiments for the week: notice every decision you make related to your willpower challenge and five-minute brain-training medication.

The first wasn’t as difficult as the second. I’m actually pretty aware of when I start to delay and procrastinate. I did, however, notice that it starts even earlier than I thought. I start making excuses not to go to CrossFit almost 24 hours in advance. I slowly start making minor excuses and then follow through. I’m interested to see what will happen in chapter two. As for the meditation I found it nice. Every day got easier and easier and I’m wondering if I should extend it to more than five minutes. The basic premise is to concentrate on your breathing and when you find yourself drifting away (which I often did, depending on when I meditated) you bring yourself back. I definitely noticed a difference each day and the five minutes which felt like forever at first got shorter and shorter each time.

Next up, Chapter Two: Your Body Was Born to Resist Cheesecake. I’m not so sure about this one based on the title, but we’ll see what’s next.

The Willpower Instinct Project – Introduction

As I’ve said numerous times I decided late last year that I planned on spending 2014 focusing on my mental health. I, being who I am, went immediately to my comfort zone and started gathering books around me to work on the things that I immediately felt I wanted to address/discover more about. So far this year that includes The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg, Crucial Conversations by Patterson, Grenny, McMillan and Switzler, somewhat shockingly Murakami’s What I Talk About When I Talk About Running and most recently Overcoming Passive Aggression by Murphy and Hoff Oberlin (the last two scheduled for later this week).

Workout Wednesday – February 2014

I’m finally ready for winter to be over. I’ll be incredibly sad to see the snow go and that there won’t be the beauty of the silent snow falling or even the cold (I do love it). The problem is I’ve definitely hit a low point. The short days and even the coldness in the morning are seriously starting to affect my ability to get out of bed, not to mention get out of bed and drag myself the half mile to CrossFit and back before 7AM! I mean the past two weeks I dropped down to one day a week, but somehow kept up at least two days a week running at the gym.

I’ve tried counteracting it by getting new SERIOUSLY BRIGHT work out gear (I needed it anyway), but that’s only given me temporary reprieves and I’m just ready to be outside again. What I really need to do is get a new pair of shoes as mine are almost stripped, it might be time to invest in a full price pair. I’m not sure how I feel about the new FitBit band, I love the brightness, but I definitely feel like it’s getting dirty very quickly.

Workout Wednesday – October 2013

**If you notice this posting, I’m back posting this. Work has been SO busy that I’m two posts behind and there’s no telling how many more I’ll fall behind. I was able to grab a few moments tonight to quick post these two posts.**

This month was split between really good and really bad when it came to working out and keeping it healthy. My workout streak passed 70 days and then I got sick and have missed almost two full weeks. On top of that I started to eat salads without fruit (see above right) which was a big step for me and they were pretty good, but then in contrast to that I ended up eating really poorly while sick and while work has gotten ridiculously busy (I’m in the middle of three 50+ hour weeks) I’ve been eating out more than I should, but I’m getting back on the ball this coming week, fingers crossed.
