Book 263: What I Talk About When I Talk About Running – Haruki Murakami

Murakami, Haruki - What I Talk About When I Talk About RunningIt’s funny how quickly things change. Back in May and June of last year I spent a good amount of time complaining about running and if you asked me then, if I’d ever read a memoir about running I would’ve looked at you like your face just fell off. Needless to say, I’m still not enamored with running, but I can say I’m incredibly glad I read it and it’s made me think differently how I will approach the future (both running and normal).

I stumbled across this book randomly and once I got it from my local library I read it in less than two days. I requested it because Murakami’s fiction writing is some of the most beautiful I’ve ever read and I wanted to know how it translated to nonfiction. Not only did it translate amazingly, but this was the exact book I needed to read at the moment. I’ve been struggling to make it to CrossFit and to keep up my training/running.

Workout Wednesday – February 2014

I’m finally ready for winter to be over. I’ll be incredibly sad to see the snow go and that there won’t be the beauty of the silent snow falling or even the cold (I do love it). The problem is I’ve definitely hit a low point. The short days and even the coldness in the morning are seriously starting to affect my ability to get out of bed, not to mention get out of bed and drag myself the half mile to CrossFit and back before 7AM! I mean the past two weeks I dropped down to one day a week, but somehow kept up at least two days a week running at the gym.

I’ve tried counteracting it by getting new SERIOUSLY BRIGHT work out gear (I needed it anyway), but that’s only given me temporary reprieves and I’m just ready to be outside again. What I really need to do is get a new pair of shoes as mine are almost stripped, it might be time to invest in a full price pair. I’m not sure how I feel about the new FitBit band, I love the brightness, but I definitely feel like it’s getting dirty very quickly.

Workout Wednesday – January 2014

Over 3000 people showed up from the original 7000 (it was delayed a week).

It’s hard to believe that it has been almost three months since my last Workout Wednesday post. It’s not REALLY that shocking when I think about how little “working out” I did in those three months, but even then I did do A LOT!

If you somehow missed it, I ran the Somerville Jingle Bell Run, my first 5k (to the right). I’m still super proud of myself and I ALMOST met my original time goal of 36 minutes (my time was 36:49) and will most definitely aim for it at the next one! And if you want to see some hilarious photos of me running the race click here. I apparently spend a lot of time looking at my feet/the ground when running and like to grimace a lot. Every time I saw a camera I was like don’t take a picture don’t take a picture don’t take a picture! But overall it was a LOT of fun and I can’t wait for the next one.

Random, Updates, Workout Wednesday

10 Months later…

After 10 months of CrossFit and two months of the Couch-to-5k I did a 5k today. That’s a pretty awesome way to spend my first day of my 30th year. (It took us WAY too long to figure that out, I turned 29 yesterday). Here are some awesome pictures:

It was a lot of fun and I finished in 36:49! My original goal was less than 36 minutes but I changed it to less than 40 minutes as I neared the end of the 5k! I ran almost the entire way minus about 20 seconds at the water station and 20 seconds up the very last hill. So I did what I wanted to do and can’t wait until the Rás na hÉireann USA 5k inMarch! 😀

I hope you all have a good holiday season! I’m hoping to get one last review in of War and Peace before the New Year, but no promises.
