Book 854: The Sugared Game (The Will Darling Adventures #2) – K.J. Charles

After thoroughly enjoying Slippery Creatures, I immediately requested the next one in the series from the library and got it faster than expected! I wasn’t really sure where Charles would take the series, and I’m even less sure having finished this one. Wherever it goes I am ready to be part of the journey!

Picking up a couple months after Slippery Creatures, we once again find Will, WWI veteran and bookseller now with his inheritance, and Kim, aristocratic untrustworthy agent-of-some-sort, thrust together at the mercy of the cult-like Zodiac. This time, it’s both more and less straight forward because at least we know Zodiac exists.

Book 850: Slippery Creatures (The Will Darling Adventures #1) – K.J. Charles

I legit have no clue how this one ended up on my hold’s shelf at my local library. It could’ve been the cover (love it), it could be the description – “MM Romance in the style of Pulp Fiction”, or maybe it was the setting of the bookstore, or maybe the author since I have read something by her previously. Whatever it was, after having extended the hold time twice I finally worked it into my schedule.

I didn’t plan to read it in one sitting, but I got sick and couldn’t sleep so started reading it and just kept going. Next thing I knew I was finished and grinning like a fool.

Book 848: The Stolen Suitor (Clyde’s Corner #2) – Eli Easton

So, Easton can tell a story that’s NOT a MM Holiday Romance 😀 I mean, I knew this was true, she clearly has dozens of other works out there, but somehow the only two I’ve read from her were both Holiday Romances.

Going into this one my first instinct that Easton bit off more than she could chew with two parallel romances happening at the same time. I wasn’t 100% correct, but I do think there were some weaknesses in the book because she ultimately split the story line and there were so many subplots.

Book 838: Keeping Hope – Alexandria Redding

We all know I loved Ngozi’s Check, Please! series and am a sucker for MM Sports Romances. So, this one had a lot to live up to and even though I had some concerns about the cover art (seems slapped together and so meh) I gave Redding the benefit of the doubt and decided to give it a go when it appeared in my inbox.*

Overall, the book was just meh (sort of like the cover). There was a lot of potential and Redding clearly has a lot of ideas, but she could use an editor (or a stronger one). So much of the book was bogged down in social issues, which I am here for every day of the week—bullying, racial inequity/police profiling, homelessness, and mental health awareness absolutely need more representation—but not at the expense of the story. In reading this one so soon after Legendborn and seeing how well Deonn wrote about injustice and had the characters learn/grow from it, I was let down.

Book 828: Bennet, Pride Before the Fall (Love, Austen #3) – Anyta Sunday

Of course, the second I received the email for this one from Gay Romance Reviews I filled out the form for a review copy 😀 No questions asked. And this was on top of already having some hesitations with Darcy being the dad of Henry from the Northanger Abbey retelling Cameron Wants to be a Hero.

As the Love, Austen series moves along I feel like Sunday is getting further and further away from the source material. This is not necessarily a bad thing when it comes to an Austen retelling, but I’ve definitely noted people being less enthusiastic in their reviews.
