January Recap 2015

2015 01-08 COLD in BostonGood grief! 1/12th of 2015 is already over and all I can think is where did it go. Mine started off super busy with one of my oldest friends weddings and me being sick for over a week. The middle portion just sort of happened and then the last week we had the sixth largest blizzard in Boston history (I was here for the fifth too!) and missed two days of work. And that doesn’t even account for the -20° and lower windchill we had earlier in the month! On the blogging front I finally did another Culture Corner post and have been waging a battle with WordPress for their ridiculous new changes.

Books and Bookish
2015 01-15 Sexy Kindle BooksJanuary should really just be known as “Jane-uary” henceforth. I finished six books, three of which were Jane Austen related (What Matters in Jane Austen?A Jane Austen Education and Northanger Abbey), two were library books (A Jane Austen Education and The Host) and three galleys (What Matters in Jane Austen?—haunting me since 2012—Waiting for the Flood, and Male Sex Work and Society). Check out that scandalous photo on my kindle! There were more, 2015 01-25 Signet Austen Typothankfully none completely NSFW because I read on the T but I was still like WHOA. I also found yet another typo in the Signet Classic set of my Jane Austen novels. It’s not as heinous as the one in my Pride and Prejudice (typo photo) copy where it says Darby instead of Darcy, but it’s still pretty bad. It makes me VERY excited to order the Penguin Classics “The Complete Works of Jane Austen” in hardback later this year. (UK version that is out already.)

Recent Acquisitions
On the purchasing front I did go a little overboard, but as usual most of them were on super sale or used 😀 I picked up a critical analysis of Wuthering Heights edited by Linda H. Peterson and a copy of Myths of Power: A Marxist Study of the Brontës by Terry Eagleton at the Jackson Street Booksellers during my trip to Omaha. I then snagged a copy of Kevin Sessums’ Mississippi Sissy on a Kindle Daily Deal (Amazon affiliate link). And the when we went to see the Goya exhibit at the MFA I came across a book titled One for the Books by Joe Queenan which looks awesome. While in Nebraska I started looking for a book on the Impressionists and I just couldn’t find a good used one to read, so I finally broke down and ordered a copy of The Private Lives of the Impressionists by Sue Roe which I saw in the MFA shop and had decent reviews on Amazon and Goodreads.

What’s Next?
2015 01-07 - Finland Postcard from AlexWell we recently decided we’re going to Spain this summer so I think I’ll start trying to work some Spanish literature and nonfiction into my reading. So if you have suggestions let me know! I’m also making more headway on my to-be-read shelf. I recently did a reorganization and hopefully I can get through a bunch of the quick  reads. On a side note, if you ever go on a trip or live in a strange out-of-the-way place I’d love a postcard from you! My friend Alex in the UK sends me postcards from most of his trips and I love to collect them from all of my trips like my recent trip to Washington, DC. I have a box of them that I add to every time I go on a trip or I receive a new one, plus my cork board at work is covered in them.

Hope you have a great February!

  1. I moved from a cold place to Victoria, BC, where it almost never snows. I love it. 🙂

Although I do like going to walks in the snow when I visit my hometown.

    1. I’m not minding the snow so much as I’m minding the ass-hats at work that are forcing us to come in since their department “worked day and night to make sure campus was clear.” Which means shit to those of us who have trek through three towns on public transportation. I’m not kidding, got off the T into a two foot snow pile because the cities can’t keep up with the shoveling.

      1. I’m quite lucky here in that when it does snow, I have the option of working at home. That does sound really frustrating.

  2. I could probably fit in a medium-sized suitcase. You know, when you go to Spain. So I can go to Spain, too.

    1. Haahaa probably would be worth it and I have a pretty large suitcase, but those luggage fees might as well be airline fees these days!

  3. It has been very cold here too and we’ve managed to have a bit of snow but nothing on the scale you’ve had! I’m pleased to hear January was a good month of reading even if you were snowed in for a bit. And I hope you have a great February too 🙂

    1. Thanks! I can’t wait to see what February brings! I’m already enjoying the books I’m reading and have selected to read next.
