Book 1,048: I Think Our Son Is Gay Vol. 5 (I Think #5) – Okura

I’m just so overwhelmed with the wholesomeness and perfection that is this little series.

The first four books were so endearing, I knew I would have to read the final one as soon as possible. It took a little while as it was the most recently released (just under a year at the time of reading it), but it was well worth the wait.

In Vol. 5, we have Hiroki continuing to live his life and accidentally letting slip that he might be attracted to other boys and Tomoko, his mom, providing all the support and safe space he could possibly need. We also have his little brother, Yuri, who is a heartthrob at a young age, but appears to perhaps be asexual or aromantic, but is very observant so also knows Hiroki might be gay. The big “drama” of the series is with Akiyoshi, Hiroki’s dad, and actually occurs between the parents.

Akiyoshi makes a passing comment about gay people and rather than letting it slide, Tomoko decides to educate him and hint, but not outright tell him that Hiroki might be gay. This, of course, means he has to question his masculinity and his role as father, but in the end it resolves and he decides he will love his son no matter who he loves.

All of Hiroki’s friends are back and just as adorable (and supportive in their own ways) as ever and even Yuri makes friends that aren’t just interested in him because he’s cute AF.

Recommendation: Even though, ultimately, there is no coming out or even acknowledgement between mother and son, this was the perfect start to an incredibly healthy relationship as Hiroki continues his self discovery and Tomoko raises two respectful and well rounded sons. It’s been a while since I’ve wanted to purchase a comic to re-read whenever I want, but this is definitely going on that list. This is a 100% recommended series and I hope that if you read it you find as much joy as I do.
