Book 628: Braeton & Drew (Something About Him #4) – A.D. Ellis

Ugh, these reviews are going to get super short. I’m hate reading the rest of the series since I paid for them and there are some (but very few) parts that are enjoyable. I continue to wonder whether Ellis has ever met had a conversation with a gay man or if this is all just her imagination.

The biggest problem with this book is that Braeton, first introduced in Bryan & Jase, is nothing like his character in that book. I mean sure he dresses the same and is flamboyant, but he comes across as a total ass in the first part of this book. He never came across as an ass in that first one.

Book 627: Barrett & Ivan (Something About Him #3) – A.D. Ellis

And we’ve gone off the deep end. We’ve jumped the shark. And any other number of references you can think of about a series going too far in the wrong direction. As I said in my response to the first book, Bryan & Jase:

SAY IT WITH ME NOW: “If I write a self-published novel, I promise I will use a professional copy editor, use multiple beta-readers, and ctrl+f any asinine phrase that I may over use.”

I’ve actually come up with a caveat to this: And I promise that if I write a novel from a different perspective than mine I will have someone of that perspective read my novel and tell me if it is okay.

Book 626: Brody & Nick (Something About Him #2) – A.D. Ellis

I’m not quite as mad at this one as I was at the first book Bryan & Jase. The cover still sucks and doesn’t really make me think of either Brody or Nick. I am still PISSED about the asinine cliche line about “favorite guy/gal/girl/man” (see OPENING LINE BELOW).

I liked the story better than the first because it was a friends-to-lovers versus a hook up turned “gay for you” romance—which I have a list of reasons why that didn’t work or even really happen in the first book. I liked the how the characters schemed to better themselves, but ultimately fell for each other.

Book 625: Bryan & Jase (Something About Him #1) – A.D. Ellis

SAY IT WITH ME NOW: “If I write a self-published novel I promise I will use a professional copy editor, use multiple beta-readers, and ctrl+f any asinine phrase that I may over use.”

Okay, now we can move on. I didn’t realize these were self-published when I purchased these (for $6) or I probably would not have purchased them. I was trying NOT to judge the books by their horrible covers and was drawn in by the blurbs.

As I was gearing up to read these I did a cursory Goodreads check and knew I was in for an experience and that’s part of what flagged for me these were self published.

Book 623: Danced Close (Portland Heat #6) – Annabeth Albert

Of the six books in this series, this one is toward the bottom of my rankings. I’m not sure if there is anything specific about this book (full disclosure it could be my biases), but I think it has more to do with this being the sixth MM Romance I read by the same author in a very short time.

For me, this one felt like Albert had a checklist of what all haven’t I included in one of my MM Romance novels in this series yet? And when she looked at her list she realized she hadn’t written a HIV positive character or non-binary character and voila Danced Close.
