August Recap 2021

August was a meh month, like July it was either super-hot or super foggy/stormy. There was no escape from the bad weather and only a couple of “nice” days, but that meant I got more knitting and reading done than I have in a while!

Generally, you can see a massive gazebo just up and to the left of the lifeguard stand in the photo. And you can see all the way to the JFK Library, roughly a mile walking from where I’m standing taking that picture. by time I got to the gazebo the entire bathhouse and lights were gone.

June Recap 2020

lifeguard chair on beach with bright blue sky and white clouds, Boston Harbor Islands in the distanceThis is going to be a relatively short recap since not much has changed since March and I’m just sort of trekking along. Tim’s finally back to a normal schedule, but I’m still WFH probably through the end of the year at this point (just speculation on my part) and we had to cancel our big August/September trip but are still hoping we’ll be able to get a house somewhere for a week at least.

Book 550: Quietus – Vivian Schilling

I was excited when the publicist reached out to me about this book, it sounded just creepy enough to not be terrifying and interesting enough because of its location.* Unfortunately, because of the problems with the location (see most of the next four paragraphs), it ultimately wasn’t an enjoyable read for me.

I will cut to the chase, the problem with reading books set where you live, no matter the time unless it’s so far in the past that it’s unrecognizable, is how much they get wrong or it feels like they get wrong. So many of these could have easily been fixed with a quick internet search of the MBTA map in Boston and just looking at a map in Boston. Boston is not a large city and its public transit is not that large or complex. I want to blame the copy editor, but really it’s the author’s fault.

May Recap 2018

Trees by the oceanAnd with the humidity and mugginess June is here. May went by so fast that we were sitting on the porch last night and I turned to Tim and asked if he ever felt time was moving too fast. He just sort of looked at me like, well duh.

The good part of May was that I think the rainy days and flooding of April were mostly gone and we had beautiful days like the one in the photo to the right! I’ve been able to walk in the mornings (5:30am-ish) because the sun is rising so early and it’s warm.

Book 459: Girl Underwater – Claire Kells

kells-claire-girl-underwaterI’m not one to generally read debut novels unless I hear from a friend that it’s great. However, with all of the great books coming out of Dutton recently, when they reached out to me about this one and I was intrigued by the blurb, I of course said yes.*

This being said, I of course probably should’ve re-read the blurb on the back before I started, but I didn’t and it was a bit of a shocker to all of a sudden be thrown into a plane crash! But if I would’ve re-read the blurb I would’ve remembered that it was set in Boston, and a large part of my excitement reading the book would’ve been lost! Thankfully, it was well written and interesting AND I got to experience the Boston portions as if I had NO idea (because I didn’t) that they were there! Seriously, she spent a half page on Anna’s Taqueria! [Anna’s website] Swoon!
