Book 674: Am I Ugly? – Siobhan Hill

What a fun quirky read! When the author reached out about reviewing the book* I had some hesitations as it’s self published and I haven’t had great luck with that in the past, but I realized as a graphic artist I could check out her site and get a taste of her style to see if I’d like it. I took a look liked what I saw and said sure, and that was definitely the right decision.

This is a quick read, like 5-10 minutes at most, but it is thoroughly enjoyable. This is definitely one of those adult books in the style of a children’s books. This is mostly from language usage and some pretty heavy concepts which fit perfectly. As I read, this reminded me a lot of All My Friends are Dead. Who doesn’t love a short read that challenges you and ultimately builds self esteem and confidence? I know I do and feel like there should be more children’s books for adults.

I think the frame/page that sold it to me was in the first half of the book and I legit laughed out loud. I planned to include a visual of it here, but when I reached out to the author I didn’t hear back from 10 days, so am posting this anyway.

The only thing I struggled with was the inverted black background and white text, but I did get used to it and as the book advanced it made a lot more sense as something more than just an aesthetic decision and I really should’ve picked up on it sooner.

Recommendation: This was a quick fun read that would be a great present for any number of people. It’s one of those books you could easily read standing in the store, but should really read a few times to process the depth and appreciate Hill’s art style and message of self love and acceptance.

*I received a copy of Am I Ugly? from the author in return for my honest opinion. No goods or money were exchanged.
