Book 959: The Dove in the Belly – Jim Grimsley

Book cover of "The Dove in the Belly" with Amazon Affiliate linkWhen I finished re-reading Dream Boy back in May, I did a quick search to see what Jim Grimsley was up to these days and stumbled across this upcoming release. I reached out to the publisher for a copy and crossed my fingers it wasn’t going to be as traumatic or emotionally draining as the others I’ve read.*

The Dove in the Belly is the story of Ronny and Ben. It takes place on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus in the 1970s and that’s the main reason I wanted to read this, Grimsley went to UNC and having it set on the UNC campus intrigued me as I also went to UNC and remember some of the history around the early LGBT organizations and experiences on campus.

Book 901: More Happy Than Not – Adam Silvera

Book cover of "More Happy Than Not" with Amazon Affiliate linkSo I have talked about gut punches when reading books before, but Silvera took it to a different level with this one—and this was his freakin’ debut novel!

I’ve known about Silvera for some time and even read his co-authored What If It’s Us? with Becky Albertalli, but this is the first time I’ve sought out his work. I came across it on a list of must-reads and so grabbed it when I saw it was available at my library.

Book 898: Trust with a Chaser (Rainbow Cove #1) – Annabeth Albert

Book cover of "Trust with a Chaser" with Amazon Affiliate linkOh, Annabeth Albert, how I love thee . . . seriously though, I should just write an ode to here and be done with my reviews. I say this even though there are some of her earlier books that aren’t as well written as her more recent books, where she’s really coming into her own, they’re still REALLY good books.

This is one of those examples even though it’s not that old. Originally published in 2017, it just doesn’t have quite the polish as her more recent series even though it has a lot of the things that make her works great.

Book 887: If This Gets Out – Sophie Gonzales & Cale Dietrich

Book cover of "If This Gets Out" with Amazon Affiliate linkMy little closeted teenage heart would’ve died to read something like this in the late-90s/early-00s. So, when I saw it on NetGalley I requested it IMMEDIATELY, the publisher approved, and I have been sitting on it for months.*

I know I’ve said it before and I’ll keep on saying it—I am SO jealous of all the teens today getting to see themselves in books like this. I mean hell I enjoy them and I am WELL outside the target demographic for these.

Book 811: Yes, Daddy – Jonathan Parks-Ramage

Book cover of "Yes, Daddy" with Amazon Affiliate linkThis is a dark ass book and a perfect example of what happens when I read too many MM Romances. I’m guessing I read the first part of the synopsis and either didn’t finish or blocked out the last portion when/after I requested a review copy.*

Don’t get me wrong, the fact that it’s dark definitely doesn’t take away from it being a good book, I just had no idea that it got dark and then even darker before starting to get a little lighter at the end. I did not like the protagonist, Jonah, and I do not think he redeemed himself by the end (and that is in no way victim blaming), he just wasn’t likeable.
