Book 977: Don’t Think of an Elephant! – George Lakoff

Book cover of "Don't Think of an Elephant!" with Amazon Affiliate linkI had to read this for a communications course earlier this fall and when I read it I blazed through it very quickly and knew I wanted to revisit it as soon as the semester was done. So I left it as “reading” in my Goodreads for over a month and finally got around to re-reading it and genuinely absorbing it.

I’m glad I re-read it, some of it was pretty obvious and some of it clearly explained things like why “climate change” is the predominant word of choice instead of “global warming.” My professor said that many of his students said they can’t watch the news anymore after reading this, and while I can still watch it I’m much more aware of the framing and terminology newscasters/journalists use than before.

Book 973: Stronger Than Longing (Chesapeake Days #3) – Katherine McIntyre

Book cover of "Stronger than Longing" with Amazon Affiliate linkAfter enjoying the first two novels (Stronger Than Hope and Stronger Than Passion) I figured I’d give the newest in the series a go when it landed in my inbox from Gay Romance Reviews.*

This is the story of bad boy Silas who is back in town because of an uh-oh baby from a one-night stand who falls in love with Taran, the quiet little brother of Nico from Passion. It starts with a one-night stand after Nico gets dumped and Silas is burning off some energy and goes from there.

Book 970: Heartthrob (Honeywood #1) – Noah Steele

Book cover of "Heaththrob" with Amazon Affiliate linkOMG, ya’ll this is an author to keep an eye on. That’s not something I usually say when it comes to a self-published author I come across via Gay Romance Reviews.*

More often than not I’m complaining about the quality of either the story, the writing, or the editing (or all three or some combination), and don’t get me wrong there were a few issues with this one but Steele can definitely write and I’m already looking at his back catalog to see what I want to read next.

Book 969: The Art of Communicating – Thích Nhất Hạnh

Book cover of "The Art of Communicating" with Amazon Affiliate linkI had to read this for a course I’m talking about the art of brave communication. We only had to read the first couple of chapters, but I found it to be an approachable and relatively easy read so kept going.

Where Hanh excelled was in his simple writing. For the most part, there were no overwrought metaphors or awkward analogies. There was one at the end that I’ll get to, but I think it’s a religious thing and it just fell flat for me.

Book 967: Our Dreams at Dusk (Our Dreams at Dusk #1) – Yuhki Kamatani

Book cover of "Our Dreams at Dusk Vol. 1" with Amazon Affiliate linkI found this one on a list of manga to read after really enjoying My Love: Mix-up! along with I Hear the Sunspot. So when I saw my local library had a copy of this I put it on hold and grabbed it before our weekend away earlier this month.

At heart, Our Dreams at Dusk is a coming-of-age and coming-out story. Tasuku has moved to a new town and he’s been outed and has to come to terms with either being open about it or trying to continue to hide it. So this one is not as light and fluffy as many of the other BL Manga I’ve read.
