Book 862: His Haven (His #3) – Con Riley

Book cover of "His Haven" with Amazon Affiliate linkThis one was a little bit of a disappointment for me. It doesn’t feel like it’s the story of this book that disappointed, more just that the last two were so strong and had such big emotional impacts that this one just fell a little short.

His Haven features Kier, a no-nonsense lawyer whose spent the last year hiding his hurt from being jilted at the altar, and Mitch, Justin’s (Tom’s younger brother with some mental disabilities, from His Compass) health assistant and friend. They’re thrown together when Tom and Nick (protagonists from His Compass) decide they want to purchase a place for Justin and Mitch to stay before/after their various sailing trips.

Book 634: The Mother of the Brontës – Sharon Wright

Book cover for "The Mother of the Brontës"I somehow managed to read a biography of Maria Branwell Brontë prior to reading a biography of any of her offspring. I’m not sure why, but when I saw this one on NetGalley it just spoke to me.*

Maybe it’s because I finally got to visit The Brontë Parsonage last year, or maybe I some how knew that Kirkstall Abbey (which I visited over a decade ago while living in Leeds) was connected to the Brontës without really knowing it. Or maybe, like Wright, I was appalled that I spent a considerable amount of time less than 60 miles from their home. Or maybe it was just another opportunity to revisit God’s Own Country via this book which Wright references. Who knows?

Book 582: Boy Meets Hamster – Birdie Milano

I randomly bought this when we were in the UK this past summer. I bought it because of the quirky title, but I was drawn to the display because it was a display of young adult and children’s books with LGBT+ characters.

Now the fact that there are LGBT+ young adult characters isn’t abnormal, I mean just look at the list of books I’ve read recently and you’ll see a half-dozen spanning two decades. What was exciting to me was the fact there was a display in the young adult/children’s section highlighting them! It was magical 😀

Book 427: The Magician King (The Magicians #2) – Lev Grossman

I finally got this one from the library and I’m on hold for the final book, the bf bought it recently, so we all know I’ll steal his Kindle to blaze through it before I even get close to being off the hold list at the library. I would’ve read this one even faster, but (unfortunately) I had to be sociable this weekend and had to actually do work in my day-job, pesky things.

Picking up not too long after the last book, The Magician King takes place almost exclusively in Fillory, the imaginary world (a la Narnia) in which Quentin and friends now live. I don’t know how I missed it, but at the end of the first book there was a huge OMG moment that I really want to talk about, but won’t until after the jump. (The TV show gives it away in the first episode.) I guess I was so enthralled I did not make the connection to who the third person was who came to get Quentin!? I have no idea! So if you don’t want spoilers for The Magicians I probably wouldn’t read the rest of this response. (Or at least skip to the next bold line.)
