Book 661: Poorlier Drawn Lines – Reza Farazmand

When the publisher reached out about this and a few other books, I recognized the style and remembered enjoying it, so selected this one as a light read between other books.* But the most miraculous thing is that I’m actually publishing this post the day the book comes out (November 19!). Usually, I’m weeks behind and struggling to catch up, but I guess with a book of comics you can meet any deadline 😀 This is a short review because it’s a pretty small collection (under 200 pages), but even shorter review: worth the read.

Farazmand publishes his comics online at poorlydrawnlines.com and they are great. They run the gamut from completely mundane and ordinary to weirdly meta and specific. I think Kevin (the bird) and Ernesto (the bear) are probably my favorites from this collection and the online posts overall, but the single best one in this printed collection involve a new ghost and his supervisor. Everything about them was perfect, they appeared the right distance apart, there was humor and sarcasm, and there was a little bit of weirdness (the cat basically). I’d recommend it just for that alone.

Recommendation: Definitely a great quick pick me up read. You could flip to any page in this and read one and more than likely enjoy a little laugh or a perplexing moment or two. The price is a little steep ($15US; $20CA) for such a small collection, but Farazmand has a great sense of humor and quirky drawings that really do draw you in to the micro-stories so maybe it’s worth it? At the very least get a copy from your local library (or better yet, peruse it there!) or check out his site.

*I received a copy of Poorlier Drawn Lines from the publisher in return for my honest opinion. No goods or money were exchanged.
