Book 599: Fence Vol. 2 (Fence #2) – C.S. Pacat, Johanna the Mad, and Joana LaFuente

Still not quite doing it for me. It’s interesting and a fun quick read, but it’s just not as good as the Bob’s Burgers comics I’ve been reading or even the wonderful Check, Please!

For me, this series will be 100 times more powerful once it’s all released and it can be put into one compendium. The amount of time between my reading of Fence Vol. 1 and this one, and the time until Fence Vol. 3 is released will be too far.

The characters, although interesting, are only surface deep. Even the two primary characters who we ostensibly know the most about are lackluster in making me want to keep reading. This is surprising since I felt they were so strong last volume (but maybe that’s because I referred to two characters who didn’t have much time in these four.

We’re now eight chapters/comics into the series and we’ve barely gotten anywhere. I looked up to see if the series was still going because Volume 3 will only have through the 12th comic and I found out that a graphic novel is in the works (Boom! Publishing website). I guess that’s good for me with my critique of the series, but who knows how long until that will happen.

Recommendation: Honestly, at this point wait for the final volume to be out and/or wait for the graphic novel. I’m sure if they’re doing a proper full-length graphic novel it will be better than this serialized comic. That being said I did finally read about Pacat’s Captive Prince trilogy and I may have to check that out. She does seem to tell a good story.
