September and October Recap 2016

2016-09-06-event-design-at-homeIt has been a LONG two months. I didn’t even realize I forgot my September recap until half way through October. So you get a half-assed double month recap 😀

I had my first major event in September at my new job and it went really well. We had over 230 people attend and it was an absolutely stunning location. Those posters in the photo were actually really cool backlights. They are printed on transparency type paper and then light put in behind them and they glow really nicely. I should’ve gotten a photo of them.

We also had an open house for our new offices in late October and that was successful as well. Sometimes I feel like I’m starting to settle in, but it’s still a lot of work and a lot of stress (mostly from doing multiple people’s jobs).

Books and Bookish Things

Due to that big event last month, I only read two books last month, but that was because I was powering through the last third of Ulysses (yeah, I read it). I thoroughly enjoyed the Serial Reader app and appreciated it even more when I go the badge to the right after finishing my first book in the app.

I have mostly caught upon advanced copies, but I have a few more I want to try to get through.

  1. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child – J.K. Rowling, John Tiffany and Jack Thorne
  2. Girl Underwater – Claire Kells
  3. Ulysses – James Joyce
  4. A Pirate Looks at Fifty – Jimmy Buffett
  5. The Courtesan – Alexandra Curry
  6. Drawn Together – Leah Pearlman
  7. You Will Not Have My Hate – Antoine Leiris (Trans. Sam Taylor)
  8. A Truck Full of Money – Tracy Kidder

I do not have a full list of books that I’ve received/bought over the past two months (fail on my part). I do know I picked up a copy of The Sellout. Like everyone else in the world I wanted to see what the first American winner of the Man-Booker had to say about the world. Here are some books from last month:

I’m pretty sure I received these at some point this month:

2016-10-09-bookstore-in-the-hamptonsI am definitely going to have to take some time over the holidays to go through my to-read lists in various places and make sure they all match up appropriately 😀

Culture Corner
In addition to being VERY busy at work I did a lot of non-book and non-work related stuff. I’m not going into detail but I believe in order below you have our exploration of the Harbor Islands, Brimfield fair, trip to the Hamptons (oh how posh we are these days – the bookstore above is also from the Hamptons) for a friend’s wedding and last but not least apple picking.

What’s Next?
I hope you all have great falls! I’m thoroughly enjoying the fall weather! I’ve started knitting scarves already (still chunky and still lopsided :-D) and I’m looking forward to having at least a little bit of rest around the holidays.

On the book front, I’ve just started reading The Four Agreements as recommended by a Human Resources person at my old job and I think I’m going to try to read a few more of my professional development books now that book group is over.

  1. Wishing someone a great fall sounds oddly threatening…

Sounds like a crazy month! Those photos from the Hamptons look very relaxing.

I’m also curious to see what The Sellout is all about. It seemed to be people’s favourite to win.

  2. So that’s where you have been for the past few months. I wondered what was behind the disappearance from your blog. Understandable thet the events took precedence, those kinds of things leave little energy for other stiff though.. .

    1. Thanks! Hope you have a great one as well. I’m already loving being able to wear light jackets and not being a sweaty mess all the time.
