Workout Wednesday – April 2014

2014 04-08 Fool's Dual T-Shirt and BibSo remember in May and June of last year when I started Workout Wednesday’s? Remember my passionate statements, in both posts, “I hate running”? Don’t believe me, go to the homepage and search “I hate running,” keep the quotation marks because it’s in there exactly and both of those posts will come up. What’s funny is this entire post is pretty much just about running!

While I wouldn’t put it at the top of my favorite things list, I’ve definitely gotten to the point where I find enjoyment in it. I really must, in April I even read a book about running (What I Talk About When I Talk About Running) and I somehow convinced myself to put both a 10k and a half-marathon on my 30 before 30 list. I’m also overly excited about being able to run outside again and take long walks where Caroline and I plan out our lives now the days are longer and the weather much more cooperative, so clearly there’s been some change of heart…

I’ve even gotten my sister and Alie (sort of) running to which is even more exciting! Now the reason for this rambling, the above picture is from my THIRD official 5k race, and not only was it my third it was by far my fastest AND I completed #1 on my 30 before 30 list of running a sub-36 minute 5k! I won’t go into the Fool’s Dual as I wrote an entire post, but it was definitely a new experience running a course for the first time on race day and having never ran/walked in the area. It was also really cool to see my friends Caroline, Hayley and Caitrin rock out at the half-marathon and cheer them on as they finished! I’m still in awe of them doing that and think they’re crazy for attempting a full marathon, but go them!

What’s really exciting is that was my second 5k this past month! I somehow convinced my sister to come into town and run the Rás na hÉireann 5k on St. Patrick’s day weekend 🙂 We were originally supposed to run it with other friends but they were training for the half-marathon or didn’t get ready for it in time, but either way we had a lot of fun!

That’s Leigh in the big picture, it was her first race and I’m not sure how impressed she was. It was super cold (I looked crazy with my multiple layers) and the route is super hilly. Great part is with that series of races, like my first in December, everyone gets a medal no matter where you finish!

I know she’s keeping up the running as she’s excited about doing the Thompson Island 4k in September which is on the Boston Harbor Island I worked for when I first moved to Boston. I am excited too, I helped plan and coordinate registration for the event for three years and definitely wasn’t a runner while working there.

On the non-running front I’ve finally gotten back into a routine where I’m at CrossFit two days a week which has been great. I’m hoping when things ease up again at work over the summer I can bump that back up to three days a week, but for now I’m taking the two days in stride! Now if only I could get my portion control in check and bump up the healthy eating again I’d be back on track.
