January 2013 Recap

Well I’m not sure how January was for the rest of you, but it flew by for me! I’m still trying to figure out where the month went! Not much to look forward to in February—it’s back to Single’s Awareness Day for me this year. I’m sure I’ll get plenty of books read and probably steer clear of romance novels for the month.

I hit my three-month anniversary at my new job and I’m glad to say I’m still loving it! Going into a busy period coming up, so fingers crossed all continues to go well. There were some major ups and downs in my personal life, but you know that’s how life is, so I’m just moving forward and making myself better as I can.

2013 01-22 Books from my SisterRecent Acquisitions
So I didn’t stick 100% to my no books rule, but I did REALLY well! I didn’t spend any of my money (all gift cards) and only purchased THREE books and they were all less than $3 because they were Kindle Daily Deals! (If you remember my two cop-outs were Kindle Daily Deals and Booker Prize winning novels for really cheap, and one of the three qualifies for both!) I purchased The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver, 11/22/63 by Stephen King and The Siege of Krishnapur by JG Farrell. In addition my sister bought me the three books in the picture above because she had money left over after selling text books 😀

Challenge Progress
In my much debated 2013 challenge joining last year I made an executive decision to read as few books from challenges as possible and still be able to participate. I wanted to concentrate mostly on reading books I already have which was semi successful. Of the seven books I read in January, five I already owned (one of which was the challenge book) and two were net galleys! So even though I only read one book for my challenges (plus three bonus books :-D) I don’t feel at all concerned or worried about it, I mean 14 is roughly one a month right?

  1. You’re very organized with your challenge progress there…which may be one reason why you’re successful at them and I’m not! 🙂 Glad things are going well work-wise, and whether you have a sweetheart on Valentine’s Day or not, I hope the month of February is full of the lovely possiblities for you.

    1. Haahaa, well I didn’t want to over commit and still wanted to participate in those three amazing challenges! It’s all about clearing my bookshelf this year, hopefully. And thanks, I hope you have a great February too!

  2. I’ve never read any Orson Scott Card. I’ve always been put off a bit by everything you hear about his personal views, but I guess it’s a matter of separating the artist from the art. I really need to read Ender’s Game this year…

    1. I know what you mean! I’ve always had issues with that, but I really enjoyed the one series I’ve read by him and this is supposed to be the ‘one’ series everyone reads. I just like to think that my money doesn’t actually go to him as I buy them used.

      1. Listen, guys. I agree that real-life Orson Scott Card is not someone to be admired. But Ender’s Game and Speaker for the Dead (so far as I remember) do not touch at all on the views you’re referring to that are abhorrent. And…they’re really good books. REALLY good. Ender’s Game is one of my favorite books of all time. There are literally things I learned in that book that have been major guiding principles in my life. So buy the books used, but do read them!

        1. That’s the same thing I said. They’re such a phenomenon I have to read them. I just make sure to get them when I know the money is going to something I support. And I don’t even mind if they discuss abhorrent views, I just don’t want to monetarily support those views.

    1. Thanks – I sure hope so! Although randomly you and Heather have given me a great idea for a challenge next year. Not that I should be thinking that far in advance, and I should probably research to see if anyone else has already set one up like it.

Can’t wait to see what you have to say about 1984 – it’s sitting in my blog tbr list because I’m so busy at the moment.
