The Literary Others – Kick Off Post

As I mentioned earlier this month, I am joining Adam of Roof Beam Reader in his event The Literary Others for the month of October. I also mentioned I would be hosting my first giveaway which I am very excited about (and a little stressed about whether anyone will enter). It won’t be a huge giveaway, but there will be a bonus if you’re signed up for the event!

Earlier in September I wasn’t sure what I would be reading or in what order, but I have determined this already for two reasons: 1) So I can read them and get my posts written ahead of time; and 2) because as I mentioned in my September Recap on Saturday I am starting a new job mid-October. (Thankfully I’ll have a week off which should give me some cushion to read and get posts ready for the end of the month!)

I have also decided, that rather than change my normal response formats and having each response for the month of November focus solely on LGBT issues, I plan to include a section in them called The Literary Others Synopsis where I will select one or two key things that I want to point out which tie into the months theme. I’ve done this for a few reasons, but mainly because over the past 10 years as I’ve expanded my reading tastes and consciously remembered what I’ve read I have experienced more-and-more books with LGBT characters and encountered more and more LGBT authors. This may not be your experience, but it is mine and that’s why I have decided to do it this way rather than put the entire focus on one aspect of the book.

So without further ado my book list/posts are below. I doubt there will be any shuffling, but I won’t give exact dates as of now even though I’ve planned out most of my blog posts throughout the month!

Now there is some cushion built-in so I can add extra books (perhaps E.M. Forster’s Howard’s End or A Room with a View, both of which I have Kindle copies of), but I also have to read a book for my Books into Movies book group (The Talented Mr. Ripley).

  1. I’m really looking forward to this! I’m going to start with Annabel since it’s already on my TBR pile. Then I’ll be making a trip to the library with my list to see what I can find.

    1. Oh I’m jealous you’re reading it first! I decided to save it until the very end because I’ve had my eye on it for SOOO long.

  2. Oh, I really enjoyed A Son Called Gabriel! I’ve wanted to read Annabel for a long time, too (I added it to my wish list way back when it was still in pre-order stage), but I definitely don’t think I will get to it this month. Unfortunately, school has limited my “pleasure reading” to just about 0 books…ever… but I’m going to push through and read at least two or three for this event. Since I’m hosting and all. Hah.

Glad you’re joining! Looking forward to the giveaway!

    1. I’m changing jobs at the end of this week and have an entire week off so I’ll be able to cushion things! Plus I’ve only got one ‘heavy’ read and a couple of novels that’ll make me think, but I went more for the fluff and pop culture 😀
