Lunchbreak Interlude VIII

It’s July.  It’s hot and humid and I don’t want to be in an office right now.  I don’t really want to be outside in the heat either, so the real question is how do I escape?  And we ALL know the answer to that…READING! 😀  (And as no post is complete without at least one picture – look at the great quote.  I’m not sure where I found it, but it’s one of the two backgrounds on my phone at the moment.)

I’ve decided to take the month of July off on my reading challenges.  It’s a bit late in the month to inform everyone, but as I’ve not read any and don’t plan on reading any I thought I should make it official.  I’ve enjoyed reading the random books I have read and just picking up whatever I want.  I’m comfortable doing this as I’m over 50% on all of my challenges and still have 6 months to go.

I’m almost finished reading Sinclair McKay’s The Secret Lives of Codebreakers (another e-galley, watch for the response on Monday) and had intentions of reading Dickens’ Great Expectations next, but will instead read Alan Turing: The Enigma by Andrew Hodges.  And then, when we’re up in Maine for the weekend next weekend, I plan on reading something fun!  Maybe I’ll reread The Hunger Games trilogy or Harry Potter. (And just to break it up again, to the left is my other phone background. Again, not sure where it came from, but must’ve been from a fellow blogger.  See below to find out more about Keep Calm and Carry On.)

Who knows, I want something fun and relaxing! If I can swing it, I might try to get the first few books in The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series and re-read those.  I tried listening to them on my iPhone via Overdrive, but that was a fail because it wouldn’t really save my place.  I got far enough through The Alchemyst to make me want to read them again!

I didn’t realize it until I was writing this post how pertinent it is that my phone background is Keep Calm and Read a Book.  I’ve spent quite a bit of time recently in the literary world of WWII and WWI and I will stay in WWII for at least another book.  I don’t remember how long ago I first saw the video below, but I loved it and desperately want to get back to Britain to visit the shop. Watch the video (2022, video removed from YouTube) to learn about where the original Keep Calm and Carry On came from and how it was found in a bookshop! (I’ve actually been to Alnwick, I visited Alwnwick Castle, and can’t believe I missed such a beautiful book shop! I will definitely have to return, perhaps when I’m there one day for the Hay-on-Wey book festival.)

  1. And the best part is – this is my do what I want month! I picked up the Turing biography and decided to pass. So now I’m just debating on whether I want to reread Harry Potter or Hunger Games. I think Harry Potter has it as it’s been far too long since I last reread the series!

    1. I need to re-read the HP series too… but last time I did so I felt a bit like an emotional wreck afterwards. Sometimes if I start reading too much of a certain thing or if I get too involved in a book I can’ do or think about anything else.

      1. I know what you mean. This’ll be the first time I’ve reread it as an entire series. I used to reread it before every film came out and every book came out (up to the film/book), but this wil be the first re-read since everything ended. One day I’ll take a picture of my HP book collection.

        1. It was my first time re-reading it as a whole series 2 years ago. That seems like such a long time between Harry Potter re-reads. I used to re-read them once or twice a year.

It’s still as good, despite knowing the end and I don’t think the fun or enjoyment will ever wear off. Did you sign up to Pottermore?

          1. I did but I haven’t managed to really get into it. I made it through the first part but then it just sort of wore off for me.

    1. I’ll never forget after one vacation back to the US, while living in Leeds, I was I heaven when my plane landed in Manchester and it was cool and rainy. I was in heaven after the 100F+ weather.

        1. Ugh, tell me about it although we’re supposed to be up for some nice weather finally. Saying that, I’m no fan of the heat but it would be nice to see nice blue skies and walk on ground that isn’t squishy.
